There are football matches. There are big football matches. And then there is El Clásico. Everything that has been building in this squad — the tactical evolution, the individual brilliance, the collective resilience — came together at the Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday night as Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 2-1 to hand Mourinho his first major scalp of his second Madrid tenure and reignite the LaLiga title race with a single, electric Kylian Mbappé winner in the 87th minute.

The match was everything the occasion demanded. Barcelona, unbeaten in nine games coming in and six points clear at the top, pressed with ferocious intensity from the first whistle. Lamine Yamal caused problems early, Raphinha was a constant menace, and Pedri controlled the tempo for long spells. Andriy Lunin — starting in goal with Courtois still injured — was the undisputed hero of the first half, making five saves including one of the stops of the season to deny Gerard Martín's header in the 38th minute. Then came the 41st minute. A Barcelona defensive error, a rebound that fell perfectly for Mbappé, and the Frenchman drilled a low finish into the bottom left corner. The place fell silent. Real Madrid went into half-time 1-0 ahead.

Federico Valverde — who had been excellent, making four interceptions and providing the right flank's primary defensive outlet — limped off at 62 minutes with what Mourinho later confirmed was a leg injury. Dumfries replaced him. The dynamic shift was notable. Barcelona pressed harder and Raphinha equalised in the 61st minute from a corner — with Tchouaméni, booked moments earlier, unable to engage as aggressively as the situation demanded. At 1-1 the match was on a knife edge.

For the next twenty minutes both sides had chances. Espí had a goal disallowed by a millimetre — Mourinho noted this himself post-match. Lunin made two more crucial saves. Then, in the 80th minute, Mourinho brought on Camavinga for Bernardo Silva. Seven minutes later, the Frenchman played the decisive moment of the match: a driving run into the box, a poke past Cubarsí, a square pass that left Mbappé with an open goal. 1-2. Camp Nou silenced. Mbappé's 100th goal for Real Madrid. In the Clásico. Mourinho ran down the touchline. The rest was noise.

"Great match, great victory, and the boys deserve it. It's also the most difficult match, against the highest-quality opponent. We've won by four goals against other teams, but this is Barcelona, and the players played a great game." José Mourinho, Post-Match Press Conference — Real Madrid official
"If we win today and lose at El Sardinero, today's victory doesn't hold the same weight, because Real Madrid doesn't play to win at Camp Nou. Real Madrid play to win the league." José Mourinho — keeping perspective after the Clásico win
"We had many chances to make it 2-0, and when you miss those opportunities, Barcelona will push hard to equalize, which is exactly what happened. Obviously, Barcelona had a strong reaction in the second half, but we always maintained calm and organization." José Mourinho
"The only thing I said to Lunin before the game was: you train to play, not to be on the bench." José Mourinho — on Andriy Lunin's extraordinary performance
"The group is very strong, with growing empathy among everyone. We missed goals at 0-0, at 1-1, missed a penalty, and Espí's goal was disallowed by a millimetre. That's life." José Mourinho — on the match's defining moments

Andriy Lunin
The performance of the season. The performance, perhaps, of his career. Lunin made nine saves at the Spotify Camp Nou — including one of the saves of the season from Gerard Martín's header in the 38th minute that kept Madrid ahead at the break. His footwork, his positioning and his distribution were all of the highest quality. He was the reason Real Madrid were still in this match at half-time, the reason the lead stood until the 61st minute, and fundamentally the reason the three points came to Madrid. Mourinho's pre-match comment — "you train to play, not to be on the bench" — was a message of faith in a player who repaid it with interest. Managing Madrid gave him a 9. FotMob backed it up. It is his night.

Federico Valverde RB role ⚡ Off 62' (injury)
For sixty-two minutes, the best outfield player on the pitch. Valverde at right back has become one of the tactical signatures of this season and nowhere has he been better than at the Camp Nou. Made four interceptions, won six of his eight duels and was the primary reason Lamine Yamal was largely kept quiet in the first half. Mourinho confirmed the injury — a muscle twinge in his right leg — which forced his substitution, and the effect on Madrid's control was immediate. Yamal came alive after Valverde left. If he had stayed on for ninety minutes, this match might have been more comfortable. Even limited to sixty-two, this was an 8.5 performance.

Ibrahima Konaté 🟨
A night of mixed contribution. Konaté was solid in the first half and his physicality provided Raphinha with a genuine challenger. But in the second half, as Barcelona pressed with more intensity and Yamal's movement became less predictable, he was less assured. Played 90 minutes and kept his concentration in the crucial final stages to ensure the lead held. Not his best performance but not his worst. The yellow card was avoidable and his passing out from the back was less sharp than it has been in recent outings.

Dean Huijsen
Performed adequately alongside Konaté in a match where the defensive demands were relentless. His composure was tested multiple times in the second half and he generally met those tests with the calm that has defined his season. Was not directly at fault for the Raphinha goal — which came from a corner — but his positioning at the back post could have been tighter. A solid rather than outstanding evening that kept the scoreline intact when it needed to be.

Marc Cucurella 🟨 90+4'
The outstanding defender on the night and arguably his best performance in a Madrid shirt. Facing Anthony Gordon — a forward in excellent form — on the left, Cucurella was defensively impeccable throughout: four interceptions, two key tackles, not a single successful dribble completed against him. His defensive output gave Tchouaméni and Bernardo Silva the freedom to operate further forward knowing the left flank was guarded. The yellow card in stoppage time for dissent was the only blemish on an exceptional evening. Athlonsports gave him an 8; it is deserved.

Aurélien Tchouaméni 🟨 46'
The yellow card immediately after half-time was the defining moment of his evening — not in a positive sense. From the second half's first minute, Tchouaméni was operating with the caution of a player who knows a second booking ends his night, which reduced his pressing intensity at exactly the moment Barcelona were pushing for an equaliser. He still won 5 of his 7 duels and made 4 ball recoveries, but the yellow card's shadow hung over his second half. His first-half contribution was excellent and his defensive positioning for the back four was the anchor that Mourinho needed.

Bernardo Silva ↓ 80'
A composed and intelligent contribution over eighty minutes — his press-resistance and quick ball movement allowed Madrid to play through Barcelona's high press effectively in the first half. His passing completion was above 88% and he created the best first-half chance for Mbappé to double the lead before the interval. Withdrawn at 80 minutes for Camavinga — a substitution that changed the game. That is not a criticism: it was the right call, and Bernardo had done his job impeccably up to that point.

Jude Bellingham 🟨 61'
His best performance in three weeks — a forward-thinking, creative and physically assertive showing that Barcelona struggled to deal with in the first half. His combination play with Güler and Diomande was the primary source of Madrid's attacking threat. The yellow card in the 61st minute — for a sliding tackle on Fermín — was, like Tchouaméni's, costly: it restricted his pressing ability in the final thirty minutes. Made a key defensive interception in the 83rd minute that prevented what would have been an almost certain 2-1 lead for Barcelona. That moment may have been as important as Camavinga's assist.

Arda Güler ↓ 90+4'
A performance defined by industry, intelligence and the occasional flash of the brilliance that has become his signature in this system. He was relentless in his pressing — making it extremely difficult for Rodri to control the tempo — and his movement between the lines created the best first-half space for Mbappé to exploit. The hat-trick of yellow cards in the first forty minutes from two bookings involving him (both on opponents fouling him) tells you how effective his movement was. Replaced at 90+4 by Trent. His contribution to the win is understated by the scorebook.

#25
Yan Diomande ↓ 90+4'
A performance of pace, directness and defensive discipline. On the left of the three attacking midfielders, Diomande caused Cancelo problems throughout the first half — his pace in behind and his willingness to track back and cover was exactly what Madrid needed with Barcelona's right side being their primary threat. Did not create a clear goal chance himself but his movement opened space for Bellingham and Güler repeatedly. There is a debate now brewing in Madrid — with Vinícius suspended — about whether Diomande should be starting every game regardless of that ban. Tonight strengthened the case.

Kylian Mbappé ⚽ 41' ⚽ 87' (100th RM goal)
One hundred goals for Real Madrid. In the Clásico. At the Camp Nou. The 41st-minute opener was opportunistic and clinical — a rebound from a blocked shot, a split-second decision, a perfect low finish. The 87th-minute winner was composed, inevitable and legendary — Camavinga's run, the square ball, the tap-in into the open net with the scoreline at 1-1 and the entire weight of the LaLiga title race hanging on the moment. Mbappé did not flinch. He never does. Managing Madrid gave him a 9 and even that might be generous to the rest of the squad who shared what was ultimately a team performance. But on a night when Real Madrid needed their best player to be their best player, Kylian Mbappé was exactly that.

Denzel Dumfries ↑ 62'
Replaced the injured Valverde at right back and, to be direct, the drop in quality was immediately visible. Yamal began to find more space and Dumfries struggled to contain the Spaniard's direct running. Was not at fault for the equaliser but his presence gave Barcelona more encouragement on their left side. Made his defensive work rate evident but the technical gap between him and Valverde in this particular role is significant.

Eduardo Camavinga ↑ 80' 🅰 87'
Seven minutes on the pitch. One decisive run. One assist. One title-race changing moment. Camavinga came on and immediately — within seven minutes — produced the decisive contribution of the entire match. His driving run beyond Cubarsí, the poke of the ball past the defender, and the calm, measured square pass to Mbappé was a piece of football that required conviction, technique and nerve in equal measure. Managing Madrid gave him 8.5. The False 9 gave him 7.5. The truth is that on a night when the match needed a moment of individual brilliance from the bench, Camavinga delivered it with the same insouciance as if he were in a training ground practice. He is 23 years old and playing the best football of his career.

Carlos Espí ↑ 90+4'
Two minutes of high-energy pressing. Not enough to rate — though Mourinho's post-match comment that Espí's goal was disallowed by a millimetre suggests he was involved in the match's most important VAR decision. A cameo defined by what was denied rather than what was done.
Our Rating: N/R

Five consecutive wins. The LaLiga gap cut to three points. Mbappé on 100 Real Madrid goals. Lunin with one of the great goalkeeping performances in recent Clásico history. Camavinga as the match-winning impact substitution. Cucurella at his very best when it mattered most. This was the night that this version of Real Madrid announced itself to the Spanish football world as genuine title contenders — not just a team recovering from poor early form, but a team with the quality, the character and the belief to go to Camp Nou and win when it counted. Mourinho was right: Real Madrid play to win the league, not to win at Camp Nou. But winning at Camp Nou makes the league feel very winnable. Hala Madrid.

Real Madrid vs Sevilla Starting 11: Vinícius Suspended, Militão Omitted from XI as Mourinho Faces Selection Crisis

Real Madrid vs Sevilla: The Starting 11 | LaLiga
Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid | Sunday Night | 21:00 CEST
Real Madrid arrive back under the dazzling lights of the Santiago Bernabéu carrying massive momentum from their domestic run, yet navigating an incredibly dense web of internal personnel problems. Following a highly intensive schedule across all competitive fronts, José Mourinho’s men find themselves locked in a fierce, high stakes battle at the summit of the LaLiga table. With league leaders Barcelona leaving absolutely zero room for tactical errors or dropped points, securing a definitive victory in front of the home crowd remains the only acceptable outcome for the Merengues.
However, this weekend's assignment against a physical, notoriously stubborn Sevilla side has been heavily compromised behind the scenes. Unlike previous fixtures where selection choices were dictated purely by tactical matchups, Mourinho faces an acute squad crisis that tears straight through the spine of his typical line-up. A combination of strict disciplinary sanctions and volatile medical clearances means that the Merengues must step onto the pitch without their most explosive attacking weapon, while their premium defensive center back can only watch from the technical bench. Navigating these constraints logically requires a complete rethink of the 4-2-3-1 matrix to ensure defensive protection balances perfectly with creative penetration against the Andalusians.

📋 The Official Squad List | Convocatoria

José Mourinho has named the following twenty four man group for this weekend's clash, seeing the return of a key name to the team sheet alongside a few temporary inclusions to offset active absences:
  • Goalkeepers: Courtois, Lunin, Javi Navarro
  • Defenders: E. Militão, Huijsen, Trent, Konaté, Cucurella, Á. Carreras, Rüdiger, Dumfries
  • Midfielders: Bellingham, Camavinga, Valverde, Tchouameni, Arda Güler, Bernardo Silva, Thiago
  • Forwards: Endrick, Mbappé, C. Espí, Brahim, Yan Diomande

🏥 The Selection Dilemma: Injured, Suspended, and Returning Players
To fully comprehend the starting grid configuration Mourinho has drafted, we must dissect the status of multiple high profile first team stars:
  • Vinícius Júnior (Suspended): The Brazilian forward picked up an accumulation of yellow cards, forcing a mandatory one match suspension. His absolute directness, recovery pace, and high velocity dribbling power on the left flank are entirely missing from this fixture, representing Mourinho's biggest tactical headache.
  • Rodrygo (Injured): The creative winger remains completely sidelined inside the medical room, continuing his long term recovery protocol with an expected competitive return pushed back to early next year.
  • Ferland Mendy (Injured): The French fullback has failed to clear fitness tests this week due to an active muscle strain, remaining out of the traveling matchday squad.
  • Éder Militão (Returning from Injury): The Brazilian center back has finally received his official medical green light and makes a highly anticipated return to the squad list sheet. However, having missed significant game time, throwing him straight into a high intensity starting role against a physical opponent is completely illogical and carries an extreme risk of a relapse. He will start on the bench.

🎙️ Mourinho’s Press Conference: "Pragmatism Dictates the Starting Eleven"
José Mourinho was characteristically direct and completely unsentimental during his pre match media briefing at Real Madrid City, addressing his forced adjustments with a focus on cold logic:
"The suspension of Vinícius is an obstacle, but I do not spend my time crying over players who cannot touch the ball tomorrow. It opens a massive window of opportunity for someone else to step up and prove their utility to this club. As for Éder Militão, yes, he is back in the team sheet, and that is fantastic news for our long term defensive depth. But logic dictates that a player who has spent weeks in the medical room cannot simply start a grueling match against Sevilla. We must act with absolute caution. I will not compromise his fitness or display defensive naivety just because a name is available. The players who start tomorrow understand their explicit defensive tracking roles, and I expect nothing short of a dominant performance."

🧠 The Logical Starting 11 Matrix | 4-2-3-1
Accounting perfectly for Vinícius' forced suspension, Rodrygo's injury, and Militão's physical limitations, Mourinho has structured a highly disciplined, robust starting configuration built to dictate transitions:

Thibaut Courtois; Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konaté, Antonio Rüdiger, Marc Cucurella; Aurélien Tchouameni, Federico Valverde; Arda Güler, Jude Bellingham, Bernardo Silva; Kylian Mbappé.
  • Thibaut Courtois guards the goal area as the immovable number one. His aerial dominance will be essential to claim Sevilla's deep cross deliveries.
  • Denzel Dumfries locks down the right back role, picked explicitly to match the physical intensity of the visitors' wingers. With Militão benched for safety, Ibrahima Konaté and Antonio Rüdiger form a towering central defensive partnership, offering the ideal mix of spatial coverage and direct aggressive pressing. Marc Cucurella commands the left back spot, utilizing his immense positioning sense to shield the flank.
  • The structural engine room relies heavily on the Tchouameni and Valverde double pivot. Tchouameni's primary duty is to anchor deep and sweep loose balls, while Valverde uses his relentless stamina to crush counter attacks before they materialize across the center circle.
  • The creative line undergoes the most radical transformation. With Vinícius out, Bernardo Silva moves out to the left flank, acting as an inverted playmaker who uses ball retention and tactical patience to control tempo. Jude Bellingham coordinates the center in the number ten role, looking to aggressively push into the penalty box. Arda Güler commands the right wing as an undisputed starter, trusted entirely to slide deadly passes through Sevilla’s low block defensive lines.
  • Kylian Mbappé spearheads the frontline as the isolated central forward, using his explosive lateral bursts to unlock structural channels and carry the definitive finishing threat.

🔄 Suggested Second-Half Tactical Adjustments
  • Eduardo Camavinga (for Tchouameni, ~65 min): Brought on to provide fluid lateral mobility and high velocity link up play as opposition lines tire.
  • Brahim Díaz (for Bernardo Silva, ~72 min): Injects vertical acceleration and aggressive one on one directness to push back a retreating deep block.
  • Trent Alexander-Arnold (for Dumfries, ~78 min): A premium tactical variant if Mourinho seeks to completely dominate possession and utilize elite diagonal passing arcs to close out the clock.
  • Endrick / Carlos Espí (for Mbappé, ~82 min): Introduces fresh, hungry physical presence to force errors inside the box and maximize set piece opportunities late in the match.
Hala Madrid!

This was one of those nights where defensive grit won the day. Following a cagey opening half that left both teams level at the break, José Mourinho’s side ground out a vital three points to steady their LaLiga title charge at the Santiago Bernabéu. The star of the show was young winger Yan Diomande, whose clinical finish near the hour mark broke the deadlock and earned him our Man of the Match honor with an outstanding 8.5 performance.

The decisive sequence unfolded smoothly in the second half. Federico Valverde, driving with trademark energy through the half-space, sliced a precise ball across the eighteen-yard box, finding Diomande, who made no mistake. Despite a difficult cameo from substitute Vinícius Júnior, who finished with a 3.5 rating, Real Madrid held their structure to shut out the Yellow Submarine.

Real Madrid dominated the expected-goals metric 1.88 to 0.62, showcasing a compact and structured out-of-possession plan that starved the visitors of high-quality chances. The narrow victory keeps Los Blancos in the title conversation after the recent derby setback. Hala Madrid.

The Madrid derby delivered drama, controversy, and heartbreak in equal measure — and left José Mourinho with printouts in his hand, fire in his eyes, and more than a few legitimate grievances about the refereeing. In a first half of genuine quality where Real Madrid controlled proceedings without creating the big moments to show for it, Dean Huijsen's straight red card on 52 minutes changed everything. From that point, the match belonged to Atlético.

The first half was a cagey, well-organised affair. Real Madrid, operating with their now-familiar 4-2-3-1 and a genuinely competitive double pivot of Tchouaméni and Valverde, were the better side in spells — Bellingham and Güler probing, Mbappé running channels and Vinícius giving Pubill an uncomfortable afternoon. Atlético's high defensive line and aggressive wing-backs kept things compact, and Jan Oblak was barely tested. The goalless first half felt like a precursor to something significant, and it was.

Within seven minutes of the restart the tie had completely shifted. Huijsen, last man, made the kind of rash sliding tackle that referees have very little choice about at that level of the game. Grimaldo, Atlético's composed summer signing from Leverkusen, sent Courtois the wrong way from the spot. Six minutes later Jonathan David — who has been extraordinary in his first season in Spain — controlled a long ball, spun away from Konaté and finished with the assurance of a man who has scored at every level he has played. Real Madrid, a man down, were two goals behind with half an hour remaining.

Mourinho reacted immediately, withdrawing Güler and Vinícius for Rüdiger and Diomande at the 54-minute mark — a decision that reshaped the defensive shape and pushed Rüdiger forward as an aerial option for late set-pieces. Camavinga replaced Tchouaméni at 71 minutes; Bernardo Silva replaced Bellingham at 82 minutes. The subs added freshness and intent, and it was a header from Rüdiger — introduced as a centre-back but used as an attacking weapon in the 89th minute — that pulled one back and gave Madrid a lifeline that ultimately arrived one goal too late.

"We could have saved ourselves the press conference because the story of the match is here." [holds up printed photos of two unpunished Atlético fouls on Valverde and Bellingham] "They are two clear red cards." José Mourinho, Post-Match Press Conference — presented photo evidence to journalists
"We can imagine the difficulties we would have had playing 11 against 10 — so imagine 50 minutes playing 11 against nine. I can only hug my players, who gave everything. We played a first half of great class and personality, and we could perfectly have won in the second half." José Mourinho
"The one who should be happy, apart from the Atlético people, is the Refereeing Appointments Committee. Everything has been very strange. The referee is 41 years old, he isn't international, and it won't be because he's a great referee. The poor guy came here and couldn't handle the pressure." José Mourinho — on referee Miguel Ángel Ortiz Arias
"I wanted to understand the decision. Atlético had a similar situation and escaped a red, but Real Madrid didn't. I'm not saying the referee decided the game. I'm asking for consistency." José Mourinho

Dumfries was caught out defensively by Giuliano Simeone on multiple occasions in the first half, conceding Atlético's best crossing positions from the left channel. The yellow card in the 50th minute, two minutes before Huijsen's red, was unnecessary and added to the pressure building on the right side. He was ultimately not the worst performer on the day but carried his own share of responsibility for the defensive fragility before the red.

Dean Huijsen 🟥 52'
The performance that will be analysed, debated and replayed for weeks. Huijsen was fine in the first half — organised, vocal, winning his battles against David. Then came the moment. Catching out of position, he made a rash, last-man sliding tackle on Jonathan David inside the box after Atlético played a ball over the defensive line. The red card was correct by the letter of the law even if the Mourinho camp has legitimate anger about two unpunished Atlético fouls that preceded it. The red card conceded a penalty, ended the contest as a contest, and left his manager with thirty-eight impossible minutes to manage. A 20-year-old will have many such moments; the hope is that this one becomes a lesson that is not forgotten.

Ibrahima Konaté
In any other context this would have been considered a solid performance. Konaté won his first-half duels with David, commanded the aerial game and was comfortable in possession. He was caught by David's movement for the second goal — a spin inside that the Canadian has perfected at club level — but it was the kind of brilliance that many centre-backs would have struggled with. Kept his composure throughout the second half as Madrid played with ten men, which deserves credit. Not at fault for either goal in the systemic sense.

Marc Cucurella
Struggled against Atlético's intensity on his flank. Kang-In Lee and Grimaldo combined to make his afternoon uncomfortable from early on and he was unable to offer the offensive outlet that Mourinho wanted from the left back position. Worked hard defensively with ten men and made a crucial recovery tackle in the 74th minute that kept it 2-0 when it could have been worse. A below-par contribution in a game that required far more from the full-backs.

Aurélien Tchouaméni ↓ 71'
The player of the match in the first half for Real Madrid, quietly and efficiently. Tchouaméni was the engine that kept Madrid's structure intact, making six ball recoveries in 71 minutes, breaking up Atlético's build-up play and providing the positional discipline that allowed Valverde to push higher. Two consecutive starts now and both have been strong performances. His influence on the side's defensive shape was evident in the contrast between how Madrid defended with and without him on the pitch.

Federico Valverde
A relentless presence throughout. Valverde's box-to-box energy was at the heart of everything Madrid tried to create — he completed 88% of his passes, made four tackles and created the two occasions in the first half where Madrid came closest to breaking the deadlock. Mourinho has pointed to fouls by Romero and Lee on Valverde as deserving red cards themselves — one of those fouls halted what would have been a clean break on goal in the 35th minute. Did not let the setbacks of the second half affect his commitment and ran himself into the ground for 90 minutes.

Arda Güler ↓ 54'
Withdrawn at 54 minutes as Mourinho reshaped the side to cope with ten men. It was not a reflection of Güler's performance — he had been one of Madrid's brightest creative forces in the first half, finding pockets of space between Atlético's defensive lines and forcing Cardoso into a significant foul in a dangerous area. His free-kick delivery was testing. A good first-hour contribution cut short by the circumstances of the game rather than anything he did wrong.

Jude Bellingham ↓ 82'
A night that summed up the derby's injustice from a Madrid perspective — Bellingham was scythed down by Kang-In Lee in the first half in a challenge that Mourinho has since presented as a clear red card. He played through it and tried to drag Madrid forward during the ten-man period, but the task was simply too great from a structural standpoint. Made a couple of important pressing triggers in the second half but never had the time or space to impose himself on the game in the way that defines his best showings. Replaced by Bernardo Silva at 82 minutes.

Vinícius Júnior ↓ 54'
An afternoon of limited return against a well-organised Atlético right flank. Pubill tracked him diligently and Vinícius found it difficult to locate the one-on-one situations where he is most dangerous. Made one sharp run in the first half that should have led to a Madrid penalty — a clip that the referee waved away. Substituted at 54 minutes as part of the tactical reshuffle after the red card, which made tactical sense given that Mourinho needed defensive reinforcement rather than a forward who was having a quiet game.

Kylian Mbappé
The one Madrid player who never stopped trying to find a solution, even with ten men, even trailing 2-0, even in a stadium that was deafening with Atlético celebration. Mbappé ran the channels, pressed Atlético's back three from the front and was the most dangerous player on the pitch during the period when Madrid were chasing the game. Had a goal disallowed by VAR for offside in the 77th minute — by the finest of margins — which would have made the closing stages absolutely dramatic. A night of largely solitary effort. His season xG figures continue to underline why he is the first name on the teamsheet.

Antonio Rüdiger ↑ 54' ⚽ 89'
Came on as a defender and ended the night as the most important attacking presence on the pitch. Rüdiger's introduction reshaped Madrid's defensive structure and allowed them to hold a respectable shape with ten men. Then, deep into stoppage time, from a corner, he rose above Hancko and powered a header into the net. It was the kind of physical, decisive contribution that you want from a 33-year-old captain in a crisis moment. He kept Real Madrid's dignity and gave Mourinho something to build on. On another night — with an earlier red card for Atlético, as Mourinho has argued — Rüdiger's goal would have been a winner.

Yan Diomande ↑ 54'
Given the thankless task of adding attacking width and pace with a man fewer. Had one clear run on goal in the 58th minute that he was unable to convert with the quality the moment demanded. Worked hard in both directions for 36 minutes, tracking back and covering spaces that the ten-man structure opened up. Showed why Mourinho trusts him — his energy and directness were exactly what the situation called for, even if the result did not ultimately go Madrid's way.

Eduardo Camavinga ↑ 71'
Brought on to add legs and pressing intensity in the final twenty minutes. Could not significantly change the dynamic given the structural problem of a man fewer. Made three ball recoveries and one important block but Madrid's predicament was beyond any individual cameo to fix by that point. A functional contribution in impossible circumstances.

Bernardo Silva ↑ 82'
Eight minutes plus stoppage time — just enough to show his quality but not enough to change a game. His arrival gave Madrid more technical quality in midfield and his quick passing helped set up the corner from which Rüdiger scored. Another sub who arrived too late to do enough but contributed meaningfully to the late pressure that nearly produced an equaliser.
FotMob: 6.6 · Our Rating: 6.5

The result was harsh on Real Madrid, who were the better team for 51 minutes of this fixture. The Huijsen red card was the decisive moment — not because it was wrong by the laws of the game, but because Atlético's own unpunished brutality in the same match went unpunished, a fact that Mourinho documented with photographs. Madrid drop to second on 15 points, three behind Atlético on 16. The title race remains extremely tight. The next month will tell us a great deal about whether this squad has the depth and mental resilience to respond. Based on what Rüdiger produced in the 89th minute — it should. Hala Madrid.
