Three games, three wins, nine points, twelve goals scored — Real Madrid's Champions League campaign is in outstanding health heading into the knockout rounds. Wednesday's 4-1 dismissal of RB Leipzig was a controlled, professional European performance that underlined the quality of depth in this squad and gave Mourinho the perfect platform ahead of Sunday's Clásico. A formation tweak to a 4-3-2-1 with Bernardo Silva and Camavinga anchoring the midfield and Güler drifting from a central position proved devastatingly effective.

The first half was tight and occasionally nervy — Leipzig, despite their 6-1 thrashing by Bayern Munich midweek, showed exactly why Mourinho had warned against complacency. Antonio Nusa terrorised Valverde's right back position throughout and Courtois was forced into two excellent first-half saves — first from Romulo Cardoso, then from Gruda's long-range effort — that kept the scoreline level before Bernardo Silva's goal. The Portuguese midfielder's composure in front of goal on 43 minutes — arriving late from the double pivot to finish after Güler's cut-back from the left — was a reminder of the quality he brings beyond his defensive duties. Madrid went into the break 1-0 up and much more comfortable than the performance demanded.

The second half was a different story. Güler doubled the lead on 52 minutes with a driven finish from inside the area after Vinícius's intelligent run drew the last defender — his fourth goal contribution in five matches in all competitions. Madrid controlled the next thirty minutes comfortably and Mbappé added the third in the 83rd minute with a strike that Vandevoordt had no answer for — a low, precise right-footed shot into the bottom corner as he cut inside from the left. Gomis, having come on as a substitute, reduced the deficit immediately on 85 minutes to make it briefly 3-1. But Diomande had the last word in spectacular fashion: receiving Brahim's high pass on the chest and volleying emphatically into the top right corner. A goal that brought the Bernabéu to its feet and put the seal on a dominant European evening.

The substitution of Vinícius Junior — brought off at 78 minutes despite Madrid being 2-0 up and the Brazilian yet to score — was the talking point of the post-match. Mourinho defended the decision robustly, praising the Brazilian's defensive work and noting the Goalkeeper's heroics that had denied Vinícius a deserved goal. The broader narrative around Vinícius's fitness, form and reported Arsenal interest continues to simmer beneath the surface of every Madrid press conference.

"We are losing 24 hours of rest, but we will play the Clásico. We've won three games in a short time and played very well in the last one. Winning three games doesn't mean we'll win the fourth. But tonight I was satisfied." José Mourinho, Post-Match — on the Clásico preparation
"Was Vinícius sad? Whether that's the case or not is very personal. You have your perceptions, but only he can honestly answer what he feels. As a coach, I can only say I was satisfied with his performance. Of the three forwards, he was the one who had to carry the most defensive responsibility. He closed spaces well. He didn't lose the ball. The goalkeeper made a great save. The substitution wasn't from dissatisfaction — it was because I have a strong bench." José Mourinho — explaining Vinícius's substitution
"Only the badge is untouchable. What makes a player untouchable isn't a captain's armband, or how long they've been at the club, or their status. What makes a player untouchable is performance." José Mourinho — pre-match on Vinícius, but defining the culture of this squad

All ratings cross-referenced with FotMob (team avg 8.28), SI.com, and managing madrid. Formation: 4-3-2-1 with Valverde at RB, Camavinga-Bernardo Silva double pivot, Güler and Bellingham as the two 10s behind Mbappé.

Thibaut Courtois
Two outstanding first-half saves kept the scoreline level at a point where Leipzig looked threatening — his block from Romulo Cardoso's one-on-one in the 22nd minute was the defining intervention of the first half and likely the turning point of the match. Without that save, the entire narrative of the evening shifts. His positioning was authoritative and his distribution was precise, feeding Güler and Bellingham quickly when the ball came his way. Could not prevent the Gomis consolation but the late goal was the result of a defensive lapse rather than any individual error.

Federico Valverde RB role
For the third time this season Mourinho played Valverde at right back and the result was the same — a performance that made you wonder why Dumfries is in the squad at all. He struggled to contain the direct and pacey Antonio Nusa one-on-one in the first half, which was the most difficult individual assignment on the pitch, but compensated with his attacking output and ball-carrying that repeatedly stretched Leipzig's defensive shape. He won the second half decisively, making Nusa a peripheral figure while delivering drives from deep that created multiple opportunities for Bellingham and Güler. Another night, another reminder that Valverde at right back is one of the most effective tactical decisions Mourinho has made this season.

Dean Huijsen
A composed and dominant performance in the middle of the back three, winning the vast majority of his aerial challenges and maintaining excellent positioning through both halves. Was caught out of position for Gomis's goal — a lapse that SI noted — but this was a minor blemish on an otherwise commanding evening. His partnership with Rüdiger is developing into one of the most reliable central defensive units in European football and the confidence with which both players now step into midfield when Madrid have the ball suggests a growing tactical understanding.

Antonio Rüdiger
Strong and authoritative in everything that was asked of him defensively — Leipzig's forwards received almost nothing from central positions while Rüdiger was marshalling the backline. His long-ball distribution was erratic, which SI flagged, but the German captain's primary assignment in this system is defensive dominance and on that front he delivered comprehensively. His vocal leadership was once again critical in the second half when Leipzig pushed for a second after Gomis's goal, ensuring Madrid did not concede the concentration lapse that allowed Roma to equalise in similar circumstances.

Álvaro Carreras
A reliable and energetic contribution at left back where he contained Baku and Gruda effectively in both halves. Did not produce the same attacking impact as the Rayo match — the system against Leipzig directed Vinícius inside more than wide, limiting Carreras's overlapping opportunities — but his defensive discipline was exactly what the occasion required. A professional, understated evening from a full-back who rarely makes headlines but consistently delivers what the team needs.

Eduardo Camavinga
A quietly excellent performance in the double pivot alongside Bernardo Silva. Made five ball recoveries, completed 91% of his passes and provided the defensive screen that allowed both Güler and Bellingham to drift forward without leaving Madrid exposed. His first start of the season in a meaningful European game and he took the opportunity with the professionalism that Mourinho demands. The partnership with Bernardo Silva is the midfield version of Rüdiger and Huijsen — complementary in every sense.

Bernardo Silva ⚽ 43'
The goal was the headline but the performance was the real story. Bernardo Silva in the double pivot is a midfield force of a different kind — his press-resistance, his ball progression under pressure and his ability to shift the tempo of play with a single pass set the tone for Madrid's dominance. His goal — arriving late from the pivot to finish Güler's cut-back — was the reward for the relentless forward runs he makes from midfield that defenders rarely track because they are always focused on the more prominent names around him. A complete midfield performance and perhaps his best of the season so far.

Jude Bellingham ↓ 88'
This was the Bellingham that had been largely absent in recent league games — purposeful, direct and an attacking threat throughout. He drove the play forward in the second half with his characteristic late arrivals into the box, and his combination play with Güler in the narrow two-10s system created the best opportunities of the evening. The Clásico would have been on his mind, and being replaced at 88 minutes with the score at 4-1 was precautionary rather than critical. A welcome, timely return to form for a player who will be central to what happens on Sunday.

Arda Güler ⚽ 52' 🅰 43' ↓ 78'
A goal and an assist in 78 minutes — and both contributions were of the highest quality. His cut-back for Bernardo Silva's opener was precise, measured and perfectly weighted. His own goal on 52 minutes was a calm, composed finish from inside the area after Vinícius's intelligent run created the space. The Courtois-Güler axis of the last four weeks has become the most exciting creative partnership in Mourinho's Madrid. In the narrow 4-3-2-1, Güler operating as one of two 10s gave him licence to drift between the lines freely — an environment in which he is genuinely unplayable at his best. Replaced at 78 minutes with the result secure. His form in recent weeks has been extraordinary.

Vinícius Júnior ↓ 78'
A night of disciplined, selfless work that deserved a goal and did not get one. He carried the heaviest defensive responsibility of the three forwards — tracking back to close Baku repeatedly — and performed that role effectively. His movement in the second half was sharp and intelligent, including the run that drew the last defender and created the space for Güler's goal. Vandevoordt denied him twice with excellent saves. Without the goal, the performance reads as peripheral — and the substitution at 78 minutes, with the score still at 2-0 at that point, will continue to fuel the narrative around his position in this squad. Mourinho was right to defend him. He was right to take him off. It was a football decision, not a personal one.

Kylian Mbappé ⚽ 83' ↓ 88'
The most complete performance from Mbappé in a Madrid shirt across ninety minutes this season. He was the focal point of everything attacking for seventy-five minutes before his goal confirmed the result — a run in behind, a touch to control, a low right-footed strike into the corner that Vandevoordt was powerless to stop. FotMob rated him 8.6 and it is deserved. He was also key in the defensive phase — pressing Leipzig's central defenders relentlessly and forcing two poor decisions that Camavinga and Bernardo Silva capitalised on. His combination with Güler in the narrow system was a joy to watch. Ten goals in ten appearances across all competitions. The best striker in Europe right now.

Nine minutes on the pitch and a volley into the top right corner that will be shown on Champions League highlight packages for weeks. Brahim's high pass, Diomande's control of the ball on his chest, the instant decision to volley first-time — it was the kind of goal that requires a combination of technique, confidence and the instinct that only the best finishers possess. His third goal of the season, all from difficult positions, all of the highest quality. At this rate, Mourinho's Vinícius dilemma is going to become a Diomande dilemma.

Came on at 78 minutes and immediately imposed himself. His assist for Diomande's goal — a beautifully floated, weighted high pass that put Diomande in the perfect position to volley — was the best individual contribution from a substitute this season. He created two more half-chances before the final whistle and kept the ball with his characteristic composure. A productive and impactful cameo at exactly the moment Mourinho needed it.

Nine points from nine in the Champions League. Twelve goals in three games. Three perfect wins against Inter, Roma and Leipzig. Real Madrid's European campaign is everything the domestic campaign is not — controlled, dominant and merciless. The Clásico is four days away. The preparation is tight. Mourinho has deployed his bench well and managed his starters carefully. This was the performance Madridistas have been waiting to see — dominant from the first whistle to the last, creative throughout, and with no late drama for once. Real Madrid outclassed a Sevilla side that never found a way through the hosts' organisation and were made to look ordinary by a team operating at close to full capacity. Arda Güler was extraordinary, Kylian Mbappé delivered a Panenka that the Bernabéu will talk about all week, and the evening finished with the extraordinary sight of Éder Militão returning from injury to a standing ovation in the 85th minute.

The tactical setup was the most notable talking point before a ball was kicked. Mourinho chose a 4-3-2-1 with Güler in the double pivot alongside Tchouaméni — an unconventional deployment that the Turkish international has spoken about wanting to try. Valverde moved to right back in the absence of Vinícius Júnior, who is serving the first of his four-game suspension following the Villarreal red card. Endrick started on the right of the two attacking midfielders behind Mbappé, with Diomande on the left.

The first half was Madrid's most complete forty-five minutes of the season in terms of territorial control. Güler's goal on the half-hour mark was the result of a Sevilla handball — and the execution from the Turkish 21-year-old was breathtaking: a left-footed finish into the top right corner from the edge of the area that gave Vlachodimos no chance. Mbappé added the second seven minutes later, arriving at the six-yard box to finish Diomande's clever low cross from the left. At 2-0 the match was effectively over as a contest before the interval.

The second half was controlled, professional, and only briefly threatened by an Mbappé turnover that allowed Bueno to pull one back on 80 minutes — a moment that visibly irritated Courtois. But Diomande immediately restored the three-goal cushion with a stunning right-footed drive into the top left corner from outside the box — his second goal of the season, his best goal of the season. Then came the Militão moment: the Brazilian centre-back, absent since April with a thigh injury, walked onto the pitch to a reception that made the hairs on the back of the neck stand up.

"It was a good game globally for Real Madrid with many players at a high individual level. We controlled it from the first to the last minute and scored quality goals. We had a high percentage of possession, which is something that doesn't always give you a real picture of the game, but today it justified the dominance we had against a good team, which we respected. It was a beautiful victory because we won, played well, and had many positive feelings." José Mourinho, Post-Match Press Conference — Real Madrid official
"The other day, half-jokingly and half-seriously, I said that if we had four Valverdes, they'd play in four different positions. He is Real Madrid's captain, and if he has to play as a goalkeeper, he will play as a goalkeeper." José Mourinho on Federico Valverde at right back
"I do not comment. We played very well." José Mourinho — when asked about constant complaints from Sevilla's players regarding Güler's alleged elbow on Peque Fernández
"For now, nothing. He'll get there." José Mourinho on Militão's return and potential starting role

Thibaut Courtois
One of his better evenings of the season. Made four saves — including a crucial intervention just before half-time that kept the two-goal cushion intact when it mattered most — and his distribution was precise and purposeful throughout. Was visibly furious with Mbappé for the turnover that led to Bueno's consolation goal and made his feelings very clear in the moment. That minor irritation aside, this was a commanding, authoritative goalkeeping performance and his best individual display in the league since the Inter win in the UCL.

Federico Valverde RB role ↓ 85'
For the second time this season Mourinho deployed Valverde at right back, and for the second time it worked. His defensive positioning was excellent, he kept Correia and later Ejuke relatively quiet, and his driving runs down the right flank added a genuine attacking dimension that neither Dumfries nor Trent have consistently provided. The Panenka assist — a late run to the edge of the box that drew the foul — was an example of his arriving quality from deep. Replaced at 85 minutes for Militão's return, which gave the Bernabéu what it wanted. Mourinho's quote about four Valverdes is not a joke. It is a statement of fact.

Ibrahima Konaté minor
A quietly composed performance alongside Huijsen. His passing was occasionally loose — Managing Madrid noted it cost Madrid some quick transitions — but his ball-carrying from the back created several dangerous situations in the first half and his aerial dominance against Ure was near-total. Sevilla did not create a single clear chance against him personally until the second-half subs changed the dynamic. A solid contribution that kept his clean-sheet record healthy despite the Bueno goal.

The early booking was careless — a needless foul on González that forced him to play the rest of the match with added caution. But everything else was exceptional. His passing was precise, vertical and commanding — he picked passes through Sevilla's press that created three of Madrid's best first-half positions. The yellow card notwithstanding, this was the performance of a player who has grown enormously in stature since arriving in the summer. Managing Madrid rated him 8 and it is difficult to argue. The suspension count from the card is something to monitor.

Marc Cucurella 🟨 73'
A mostly solid first half that became difficult when Sevilla brought on Ejuke at half-time — the Nigerian winger's pace and directness turned the previously quiet left side of Madrid's backline into the most uncomfortable position on the pitch. The yellow card for a foul on Alfon González was unnecessary and is now a booking to add to the growing tally of yellow cards for this defence. Did contribute one good cross in the first half that almost gifted Mbappé a third before the penalty, but overall a functional rather than impressive evening.

The double pivot with Güler took the spotlight and the numbers away from Tchouaméni, but his defensive contribution was essential to everything that followed. Won six of his eight duels, made three crucial tackles and gave Güler the freedom to express himself by doing all of the dirty work. He will never take the headlines in this formation but his ball-winning and positional discipline were exactly what Mourinho needed alongside such an attack-minded midfield partner. Arda Güler ⚽ 30' ↓ 78'
The performance of the season so far — in this system, from this position, against this level of opposition. Güler in the double pivot is a tactical revolution — a player with his technical quality, vision and press-resistance giving Madrid an attacking axis from deeper positions that they have not had since the peak of Kroos. His goal was extraordinary: a left-footed finish into the top right corner from outside the area off the back of a Sevilla handball — driven, precise and utterly confident. He attacked Juan Iglesias relentlessly off the dribble and created two more chances from the same zone. Replaced at 78 minutes by Camavinga as Mourinho managed the result. The controversy over an alleged elbow on Peque Fernández — which the referee did not act on — should not overshadow what was a genuinely elite individual performance. SI rated him 9. It is justified.

Jude Bellingham ↓ 70'
A better performance than recent outings — more purposeful, more involved, and finally showing signs of the vertical, incisive running that has been absent in recent weeks. His movement between the lines created space for both Güler and Diomande throughout the first half, and the assist for Mbappé's first — drifting wide before playing a clever inside ball — was precisely the kind of creative contribution that defines his best form. He was substituted at 70 minutes with the result well in hand, replaced by Bernardo Silva. That league goal drought is now running to eight games, which remains a concern, but there was encouragement here.

Had a left-footed chance in the first half that sailed high and wide from a promising position. Worked hard in his pressing role and was always available for short combinations. Then his 82nd-minute finish — a right-footed drive from outside the box that flew into the top left corner — was the kind of goal that reminds you that this is not a squad player contributing cameos. The Panenka is already the image of the season. With the Bernabéu roaring for the third goal, Mbappé stepped up to the penalty spot and chipped it audaciously down the centre as Vlachodimos dived left. It was the kind of moment that only players with an iron nerve and complete self-belief can produce. But the Panenka was not the whole story: his first goal was a deft, composed finish at the six-yard box; he was a constant menace in the channels throughout the first half; and the only dark note was the turnover that led to Bueno's goal — which prompted Courtois's fury and which Mbappé acknowledged with characteristic directness on the pitch. This was the sort of Champions League night that reminds you why Real Madrid are the most decorated club in the history of the competition. Trailing 3-1 with seven minutes remaining, in the Stadio Olimpico, against a Roma side that had been the better team for most of the second half, Mourinho's side conjured something remarkable. Three corners. Three headers. Three goals in seven minutes. The place fell silent. The bench went wild. And José Mourinho — the man who spent three years loving these fans and this city — allowed himself a clenched fist before the final whistle.

The first half was a tight tactical battle. Mourinho had correctly identified that Roma, under Gasperini, press with relentless man-marking intensity from a 3-4-2-1, and he set up his 4-2-3-1 to try and play through the press rather than over it. It worked in spells — the Mbappé equaliser on 25 minutes, created by a sharp Diomande assist, was a moment of pure, incisive quality that showed exactly what this team can do at its best. De Roon's opener, though, was a setback and the interval feeling was one of tentative equilibrium.

The second half began with Gasperini's masterstroke — Rodrigo Mora on for Dybala, providing fresh legs and the assist for Malen's 51st-minute goal. Then another Malen finish on 57 to make it 3-1. The visitors looked shell-shocked. Their press was being bypassed, their shape was poor, and Mourinho was already making the changes that would ultimately win the match — Endrick on for Vinícius at 59 minutes, Güler on for Dumfries (a positional change that moved Valverde to right wing). Tchouaméni made way for Bernardo Silva at 70 minutes. Diomande off for Espí at 78. Konaté off for Carreras.

And then Güler took a corner. Endrick got his head to it. Espí reacted to the parried save. 3-2, 83rd minute. Two minutes later, another Güler corner. Another Endrick header. 3-3. Chaos at the Olimpico. And in stoppage time, Güler's delivery again found Rüdiger — the man who spent six years at this club, who knows every inch of this stadium, who has waited his entire professional life for a moment like this — ghosting in at the far post to head home the winner. 4-3. Football is never over.

"We faced a difficult opponent who play a different style, relying heavily on man-marking at high intensity. They deserved to go ahead, even though I wasn't happy with the two goals we conceded. The 3rd goal we conceded was ridiculous." José Mourinho, Post-Match Press Conference — Stadio Olimpico
"That's why I was talking a lot with Tchouaméni during the first half to make the necessary adjustments, and when the second half began I felt the team had become more stable. After that we showed an organised fighting spirit, and it was an emotional reaction within a tactical framework that helped us a great deal." José Mourinho — on the tactical adjustments
"In the final 20 minutes, Roma were dead. It's difficult to play with this style and intensity like they do. We made some changes; if we'd conceded a fourth goal, it wouldn't have changed the way I feel about tonight." José Mourinho — speaking to Prime Video at the Stadio Olimpico
"When they asked me if Roma could sign Endrick, I said impossible. I know what he can do." José Mourinho — on Endrick's match-winning cameo

Thibaut Courtois
An uncomfortable night for the Belgian, who will not want to revisit the footage of the second and third Roma goals. The deflection for Malen's first was unfortunate but the second was a genuine error — his positioning allowed the Dutch forward a clean low finish at his near post. Made an important first-half save to keep Madrid level when the score was 1-1, but the overall defensive performance in front of him was poor enough that no goalkeeper could have fully compensated. His distribution was steady when called upon. This was a match that exposed structural rather than individual failings, but Courtois was not blameless.

Denzel Dumfries ↓ 59'
A difficult evening at right back against a Roma side that targeted his flank relentlessly. Wesley gave him serious problems in the first half with his direct running and physicality, and Dumfries was unable to provide the attacking contribution that Mourinho wanted. His removal at 59 minutes — replaced by Güler, which allowed Valverde to move to the right wing — was a tactical decision rather than a personal indictment, but he had done enough poorly to make the change logical. His performances this season have been increasingly inconsistent.

Ibrahima Konaté ↓ 78'
A night to forget in the Roman capital. Was bypassed for Malen's second goal with ease — caught flat-footed as Soulé played a simple ball through the defensive line. His aerial dominance, which has been a feature of his Madrid career, was absent here. Replaced at 78 minutes for Carreras as Mourinho reorganised defensively for the final stages, which was the right call. A poor evening from a player whose individual quality demands more.

Antonio Rüdiger ⚽ 90'
One of the greatest individual moments in the story of any Real Madrid player this season — and yet one of his worst performances as a starter. Rüdiger was poor for both Roma goals in the second half, losing his man and being caught out of position in a way that has rarely characterised his Madrid career. But then came the 90th minute. Arda Güler's corner, Rüdiger's run to the far post, an instinctive, powerful header into the bottom corner. The German wheeled away in disbelief. The comeback was complete. You cannot tell this story without giving him the hero's credit he deserves — but the rating here represents his full 90 minutes, of which 83 were substandard and seven were legendary.

Marc Cucurella
Struggled against Molina and Soulé for the entire duration. Was unable to prevent the supply line that produced both of Malen's goals, contributing to what was a dismal defensive evening from the entire back four. Did try to push forward when the scoreline dictated urgency but his attempts at creativity fell short. One of his more difficult nights in a white shirt this season.

Aurélien Tchouaméni ↓ 70'
Completely overrun by Roma's man-marking system, which targeted the double pivot with three midfielders and consistently bypassed him in the first half. Mourinho has said he spent much of the first half talking to Tchouaméni about tactical adjustments, which underlines how uncomfortable he was. Withdrawn at 70 minutes for Bernardo Silva as Mourinho sought a different midfield profile. His role in the second-half comeback was minimal but the adjustments he absorbed during the first half laid the groundwork for the tactical reshuffle that turned the game.

Federico Valverde
Captained the side in the absence of a clear leadership hierarchy and showed the character the armband demands — he never dropped his head even when Madrid were 3-1 down. His positional switch to the right wing after Güler came on at 59 minutes gave him more freedom and he was a key presence in the pressing that wore Roma down in the final stages. His first-half contribution as a pivot was underwhelming — Roma's numerical midfield superiority made it impossible to function effectively — but his movement and energy in the second half deserves credit.

Yan Diomande 🅰 25' ↓ 78'
His best performance in a Real Madrid shirt across 78 minutes — relentlessly direct, continuously available for combinations, and the player who provided the assist for Mbappé's equaliser with a sharp, incisive cut-back that gave Mbappé the cleanest of finishes. He created the goal that kept Real in contention at half-time, and without that goal, none of the second-half drama would have been possible. In the second half he began to tire as Roma doubled their efforts to contain him, but his replacement by Espí at 78 minutes gave Madrid the fresh attacking legs they needed. The teenager is growing in stature with every Champions League appearance.

Jude Bellingham
Was the connective tissue between the lines throughout — even when the scoreline was bleak and Madrid looked incapable of a response, Bellingham continued to drive forward, demand the ball and find combinations in tight spaces. His ball retention and ability to carry through Roma's press was Madrid's primary creative outlet when the structural plan was failing. Did not find the goal his efforts probably deserved but his role in the comeback — maintaining belief, keeping the ball moving — was understated and important. A quietly excellent performance on a night when others failed more visibly.

Vinícius Júnior ↓ 59'
A night of mixed emotions for the Brazilian. Coming off the back of a red card against Villarreal, he began brightly here — driving at Roma's right back with intent and making the intelligent runs that show he is back in the right mindset. But a significant individual error in the middle of the field led directly to Roma's second goal — losing the ball carelessly in a dangerous position that Malen converted before Vinícius had recovered. Substituted at 59 minutes following the third Roma goal. The error cannot be ignored despite the positive intent he showed.

Kylian Mbappé ⚽ 25'
A century of Champions League appearances marked with a goal — and what a goal it was. Diomande's cut-back found him arriving at the perfect angle inside the box and he drilled an emphatic finish past Gollini to level the match at 1-1. It was his 100th Champions League appearance, and his 73rd goal in the competition — a statistic that confirms his standing alongside the sport's absolute elite. Had a goal disallowed for offside in the 68th minute that would have changed the entire narrative of the match. Was denied twice by Gollini in the second half before the late comeback unfolded. A night of personal and collective drama that Mbappé handled with the composure of a player who has done all of this before.

Arda Güler ↑ 59' 🅰 85' 🅰 90'
The architect of the comeback. Every great heist needs someone who draws up the plan, and on this night it was Güler. Introduced at 59 minutes as Roma were beginning to feel secure at 3-1, he moved into the midfield vacated by Tchouaméni's departure while Valverde shifted wide — and immediately changed the quality and tempo of Madrid's play. He was calm. He was precise. And when it mattered most, his corner delivery was flawless. The corner for Endrick's equaliser — whipped perfectly to the near post, weighted exactly right. Then the corner for Rüdiger — identical delivery, identical outcome, identical bedlam. Two assists from dead-ball situations in a seven-minute spell that ended with Real Madrid winning a match they had no right to win. At 21 years old, this is a player for Madrid's future. It is also a performance for their present.

Endrick ↑ 59' ⚽ 85' 🅰 83'
Arguably the best 31-minute cameo by any Real Madrid substitute this season. Introduced at 59 minutes with Madrid losing 3-1 and looking devoid of ideas, Endrick immediately brought directness, aerial threat and the kind of fearlessness that only teenagers playing without the weight of expectation can provide. His header from Güler's corner in the 83rd minute — the one that Gollini parried for Espí to convert — was the catalyst. His second header two minutes later was the equaliser: perfectly timed, powerfully directed. Mourinho summed it up perfectly: he knew exactly what Endrick could do. The only question was when. The answer, emphatically, was tonight. The Stadio Olimpico fell silent in a way that only a 19-year-old Brazilian scoring in the 85th minute can make it.

Carlos Espí ↑ 78' ⚽ 83'
The man who started the comeback. Introduced at 78 minutes — his third consecutive match as a substitute in the final quarter of an hour — and within five minutes had provided the spark that changed everything. Endrick's header was parried; Espí, arriving at speed from the edge of the area, reacted quicker than everyone to tap in the rebound. It was the predatory instinct of a natural finisher who makes himself available in exactly the right position at exactly the right moment. Three goals in eight appearances, all from substitute roles, all when Madrid needed them most. This is not coincidence. This is quality.

Bernardo Silva ↑ 70'
Came on at 70 minutes to provide midfield stability and recycling of possession as Madrid pushed bodies forward. Was not directly involved in any of the three comeback goals but his presence helped keep the ball and maintain the pressing structure that wore Roma down mentally and physically. A calm, functional contribution in a frantic situation.

Álvaro Carreras ↑ 78' 🟨 90+5'
Came on at 78 minutes at left back to shore up the defensive shape as Madrid chased the game with three attackers. Did his job competently before receiving a yellow card in stoppage time for a foul on Pellegrini. Twelve minutes is too short for a full rating but his composure was exactly what the situation required.
FotMob: 6.5 · Our Rating: 6.5

This was not a performance. This was a statement of identity. What happened in those final seven minutes at the Stadio Olimpico cannot be explained by tactics alone — it requires something more fundamental: the belief, baked into the culture of this football club, that matches are never over. Arda Güler delivered it with two perfect corners. Endrick claimed it with two perfect headers. Rüdiger sealed it with the kind of goal that only happens to the players who deserve them most. And José Mourinho, returning to the club that taught him what football really means, allowed himself a rare, unguarded moment of emotion. Hala Madrid. Sempre Roma, but tonight — Madrid. Hala Madrid.

Real Madrid 4-1 Rayo Vallecano: Mbappé Double and Carreras Masterclass Get Mourinho's Men Back to Winning Ways

Real Madrid bounced back emphatically from their recent domestic slip-up with a commanding 4-1 victory over cross-town neighbors Rayo Vallecano at the Santiago Bernabéu. Eager to dust off the narrow 1-0 defeat to Real Betis last week, José Mourinho opted for an aggressive starting lineup that combined flair, power, and immediate tactical intent.
The gamble paid off rapidly as Los Blancos steamrolled through the first 45 minutes. A clinical first-half blitz featured a Kylian Mbappé penalty, a beautifully worked goal from Álvaro Carreras, and a trademark arrival into the box by Jude Bellingham to put Madrid 3-0 up before the break. Though a temporary dip in physical intensity early in the second half allowed Sergio Camello to pull one back for the visitors, Madrid held tight. Deep into stoppage time, Mbappé slammed home his second of the night to tie things up neatly, securing all three points and keeping Madrid tied at the summit of LaLiga.

🎙️ Mourinho's Post-Match Comments: "A 45-Minute Affair"
Speaking to reporters in the Bernabéu press room after the final whistle, José Mourinho gave a candid, tactical breakdown of his team's performance, highlighting both their devastating early form and their visible second-half fatigue:
"The win was important, especially after last round's defeat to Real Betis. The aim was to start strongly and wrap the match up quickly, and we achieved that. I’d describe the match as a 45-minute affair. In 45 minutes, it was over."
Addressing the team's visible drop-off in the second period, Mourinho focused heavily on the grueling nature of the current calendar:
"I knew the team didn't have the physical and mental strength to play the second half the way they did. A good illustration of what I'm saying is how Bellingham played without any energy for the last ten minutes. Practically everyone made mistakes in build-up play, struggled to press... I expected it to be like that given our Champions League experience."
Mourinho also took a moment to praise the depth of his squad, highlighting the positive impacts of Arda Güler and debut starter Yan Diomandé:
"Arda makes a big impact when he's on the pitch. When he came on, he made all the difference in terms of the stability of our play. There's nothing but quality on the bench. As for Diomandé, he has incredible potential. He's got a lot to learn tactically, but right now, I just want to help him develop."

📊 Real Madrid Player Ratings: Matchday 5 (Season Rating)
Here is how the individual Merengues fared under Mourinho's tactical spotlight on Saturday night:
🧤 Goalkeeper & Defense
Thibaut Courtois — 6.5/10
Hardly called into serious action during the first-half onslaught. He made a couple of comfortable collections from distance and cleared his lines well. Could do nothing to prevent Camello's close-range effort.

Denzel Dumfries — 7.5/10
An absolute powerhouse down the right channel. He proved completely unbreakable in individual duels and nearly added a goal of his own with a thumping header from a corner routine.

Ibrahima Konaté — 6.0/10
Brought exceptional recovery pace when moving out from the back. However, he suffered a slight blemish when Camello's shot unluckily slipped through his legs for Rayo’s lone goal.

Álvaro Carreras — 9.0/10 (Man of the Match)
An absolute revelation on the left flank. He won the penalty for the opener, combined brilliantly with Mbappé to smash home Madrid’s second goal, and looked dynamic every time he moved forward.
⚙️ Midfield & Tactical Transitions
Federico Valverde — 7.5/10
Captain for the night. Valverde provided the defensive stability and work rate Mourinho begged for in the middle of the pitch. He pressed frantically and controlled the distribution tempo.

Jude Bellingham — 8.0/10
A lethal offensive force in the first half, timing his run to perfection to make it 3-0. He completely ran out of gas around the 80th minute as noted by his manager, but his foundational work was world-class.

Yan Diomandé — 7.0/10
Handed his first official start by Mourinho. While his raw tactical positioning requires refining, his one-on-one directness and acceleration gave the Rayo backline constant nightmares.
